grapefruit4.jpgThe grapefruit diet has been around since the 1930's so this is not a new diet by any means.  The grapefruit diet has also been called The Hollywood Diet and the Mayo Diet.  No one is really sure who started the grapefruit diet since to date no one has clamed ownership of the diet.  The grapefruit diet became worldwide because of word of mouth, online and in books. 

It has been stated that the grapefruit diet is based on the fact that eating grapefruit with some protein will burn fat and cause weight loss.  The grapefruit diet burns fat and causes weight loss.  The grapefruit diet is designed to help people lose 10 pounds in 12 days.  If you want to continue with the diet after the 12 day period, you need to wait 2 days to restart the grapefruit diet. 

In the grapefruit diet, you eat foods breakfast, lunch, dinner and at bedtime. It is also recommended that the dieter drink black coffee and plenty of water throughout the day.  For example:

Breakfast- 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, black coffee and ½ grapefruit or 8 ounces of grapefruit juice.
Lunch-  Salad with salad dressing, unlimited amounts of meat and ½ grapefruit or 8 ounces of grapefruit juice.
Dinner- Red or green vegetables or a salad, unlimited amounts of meat or fish and ½ grapefruit or 8 ounces of grapefruit juice.  When eating the vegetables, avoid the starchy vegetables such as peas, beans, corn and sweet potatoes.
Bedtime- 8 ounces of skim milk.

The grapefruit diet consists of low carbohydrates and moderate protein.  You will consume 800-1,000 calories per day. There was a study that was conducted in 2006 that was funded by the Florida Department of Citrus that discovered if a half of a grapefruit or 4 ounces of grapefruit was consumed with each meal, this resulted in a weight loss of more than 3 pounds in 12 weeks.  In fact, some participants in the study lost an amazing 1o pounds in the 12 week period.  Some researchers in the study believe that the insulin was reduced in the meals which helped with weight loss.  The participants also recorded an increase in energy with the weight loss.

It should be noted that while the grapefruit diet is great for short term weight loss, it is not recommended for long term weight loss.

It is no secret that red grapefruit can be a healthy part of any diet or weight loss plan. If you eat half a grapefruit or drink 4 ounces of grapefruit juice before each meal, you will fill up and have a full feeling so you will consume fewer calories at meals, helping you to lose weight. It has also been noted that red grapefruit is very rich in beta-carotene.
