grapefruit19.jpgIf you're starting a new healthy diet but don't want to give up all the foods you love you can use grapefruit and other citrus fruits to give your favorite recipes a healthy makeover.  When people switch the way they eat it's usually because they have to for health reasons, or because they really want to lose weight and keep it off, or because they are choosing a new dietary path.  But giving up the foods that you've been eating for a long time is tough, and you will start to crave the foods that are the most familiar to you.  When that happens the best thing to do is to make those dishes as healthy as possible so you can have them without throwing away all the effort you've put into a new healthy diet.  Substituting grapefruit juice and orange juice for various ingredients in your favorite recipes is one way that you can make your favorite foods in a healthier way.

Processed and refined sugar is very unhealthy, and most people eat more of it than they realize. Refined sugar is in almost all the foods that people eat on a daily basis so it's easy to eat more than  you should. When you eat too much refined sugar, which your body has a hard time breaking down even in small amounts, all the extra sugar gets stored in the body as fat. If you're not active enough to burn up all that fat for energy you end up gaining weight. You can use grapefruit juice as a substitute for refined sugar in the dishes that you cook so that you're eating healthy natural sugars that your body can easily break down.  You can use citrus fruit juice instead of water in any recipe, and you can use it as a sugar replacement in many recipes.  Just make sure that you decrease the amount of liquid in the recipe to make up for the liquid in the juice.  You can also use grapefruit segments to sweeten salads instead of sugary dressings, or use grapefruit compote instead of jam on your breakfast toast or over ice cream.  Orange juice and tangerine juice will give your dishes a super sweet taste, so use those fruit juices in desserts where you want to have a lot of sweetness but use grapefruit juice in dishes where you want to use natural sugar but don't want the dish to be super sweet.
