How much do you really know about grapefruit? Do you think that grapefruits are only eaten at breakfast? Grapefruits are actually a great food to eat anytime. Grapefruit is synonymous with breakfast, but grapefruit can be eaten as a healthy snack, used to flavor salads and savory main dishes, or used to sweeten baked goods without adding sugar.

Candied grapefruit, along with other candied citrus fruits, is often used as a garnish or as a sweet snack.  Candied grapefruit peel is a great garnish for cocktails or savory dishes.  Grapefruit has a lot of medicinal benefits and has been proven to help people lower cholesterol and lose weight.  Despite its versatility many people still only think of grapefruit in connection with breakfast. Here are some other things that you may not know about grapefruit:

Grapefruit has a low impact on blood sugar, making it a perfect snack for those with Diabetes.  Sweet grapefruit varieties are often recommended to diabetics, along with other citrus fruits, as snacks that can replace sugary snacks which may have a high impact on blood sugar. One of the elements that is naturally occurring in grapefruits has been shown to burn fat, so eating grapefruit really can help you lose weight. Grapefruit also has a lot of fiber, which will help you feel full for a longer period of time which can help you eat less.

There are several different types of grapefruits, so if you have not eaten grapefruit as a regular part of your diet because you find it to be a little sour try a different variety, like the Ruby Red grapefruit, which is sweeter than any that you might have had before. You may find that you like grapefruit enough to make it a regular part of your diet.

Like other citrus fruits grapefruits are high in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and other vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health.  Eating at least one grapefruit per day, or drinking concentrated grapefruit juice, can help you stay healthy and energized all day long. It can also help your immune system fight off illness and disease.

Grapefruits are grown all over the world, but the grapefruit originated in Barbados. Today most of the grapefruit consumed throughout the world is grown in Florida and in one specific region of Texas that has the necessary subtropical climate for grapefruit to thrive.
