A grapefruit from California cut in half

Ruby Red grapefruit was discovered in 1929 on a small farm in South Texas. We say discovered because the Ruby is actually a natural mutation.  Fortunately, it is one of the few mutations more successful than its predecessor. Why is this? Well, it all comes down to taste. You see, earlier varieties of grapefruit were sour and tart. But Ruby Red grapefruit is sweet and tangy.

And even though the white and pink varieties have been around a lot longer, the Ruby is the world's most popular grapefruit. Another interesting fact about Ruby Red grapefruit is that it is actually better for you that the original grapefruit. That's right! This is one case where tasty and healthy go hand-in-hand.

Of course, both grapefruits are good for you. Red and white varieties both have high levels of vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential because it acts as a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are helpful little molecules that do battle with harmful free radicals. These nasty little fiends go around damaging healthy cells with impunity. That is, unless antioxidants are there to stop them.
White and Ruby Red grapefruit also contain flavonoids, which are a special kind of antioxidant. The most important health benefit of these falvonoids is that they have anti-inflammatory properties. As you may know, anti-inflammatories can help provide relief for people who suffer from painful chronic conditions like arthritis.

Both grapefruits are also a great source of salicylic acid, which has been proven to alleviate the painful symptoms associated with arthritis. How does it work? The acid actually breaks down calcium that can accumulate around the joins and can cause pain and discomfort. That why arthritis suffers often enjoy several glasses of grapefruit juice each day.

Ruby red grapefruit and white grapefruit are also high in dietary fiber. Fiber promotes healthy bowel movements and improves the health of the digestive system. That is an establish fact. Studies have also shown that high fiber diets can lower cholesterol levels, which may lead to reduced risk of hypertension and heart disease.

At this point it seems as if the two varieties are strikingly similar and have a lot in common with other citrus fruits like oranges and tangerines. However, there is one important discrepancy, and that is the amount of vitamin A. For some strange, unknown reason, the Ruby Red grapefruit has twenty-eight times more vitamin A than the original white grapefruit.

Why is this important? Just like vitamin C, vitamin A works as a powerful antioxidant. That is why most doctors recommend eating Ruby Red grapefruit for the more potent antioxidants. Vitamin A is also used to treat common skin conditions like acne or simple rashes.
