What is the history of apples?
Apples are the most common fruit found in households across the globe and is ranked 2nd for most widely consumed fruit in the United States right behind bananas. It is so ancient and popular that it frequently pops up in literature, Western art and everyday speech. But where did this fruit came from?
- Apples are members of the Rosaceae family and originated in Central Asia, along the slopes of the nearby Tien Shan Mountains in Kazakhstan.
- They are the first plants that people cultivated on purpose.
- People from Greece and Italy were eating gourmet apples by 2000 BC, and there are recorded apples planted in Egypt in 1300 BC.
- It was first introduced to North America in the 17th century. The first apple orchard was planted in 1625 in Boston by Reverend William Blaxton. During that time, people stored apples for winter so they can have food when nothing else was growing. Apples gifts were also given during those times to help people out during droughts and when food was scarce.

How are apples grown?
Today, apples are seldomly grown from seeds because of its extreme heterozygosity, a characteristic that ensures apple grown from seeds will result in trees that are nothing like its parents. Apple growers prefer to preserve the characteristics of their favorite variety and thus propagate apples of the same variety by grafting. As of record there are 7500 varieties of apples grown worldwide and 2500 grown in the United States.
Where are apples grown?
Of the many apple varieties to choose from, Fuji apples are the most popular. The Fuji apple is a hybrid developed in the late 1930s in Fujisaki, Japan where it got its name from. Although developed in Japan, it is an all-American cross between the Virginia Ralls Genet and Red Delicious apple varieties. It was introduced to the US in 1960s. It is dense, crisp and regarded as the sweetest among all the varieties, making it great for eating raw, chopped up for salad or used as pie stuffing.
Other popular apple varieties include the Red Delicious apple which was originally known as the Hawkeye apple and best enjoyed raw; The McIntosh apple is great for making salad and sauce; The Golden Yellow apple variety are mild yet sweet and can be used for many purposes; New Zealand bred Gala apples that are best enjoyed raw, as juice or on top of a salad; Granny Smith apples have a bright neon green color and can be used for pies and salad where its tartness can be offset.
