Asian Pears are sweet, juicy, and crisp which make them a favorite for eating fresh out of hand. Their firm flesh also makes them great for cooking. This spiced Asian Pear Crisp is a perfect fall dessert and when served with vanilla ice cream it can’t be beat.

Ingredients

6 Asian Pears

1 Tbs Apple Cider Vinegar

3/4 Cup Brown Sugar, divided

1/4 tsp Cinnamon

1/4 tsp Nutmeg

1/4 tsp Ground Ginger

1/8 tsp Salt

1/2 Cup All Purpose Flour

1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Pastry Flour

6 Tbs Unsalted Butter, cut into small chunks and chilled

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375ºF. Peel, core, and chop pears into 1-inch pieces. In a mixing bowl combine chopped pears, vinegar, spices, salt, and 1/4 Cup of the brown sugar. Stir to blend ingredients well. Transfer pears to a 2-quart baking dish.

In a second mixing bowl, combine both flours, the remaining brown sugar, and stir. Add the chilled butter chunks and work them into the flour with a large fork, pastry cutter, or by hand until combined fully. Spread the flour-butter mixture evenly over the pears. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until the topping is brown and bubbly. Remove from oven, allow the dish to cool for 5 to 10 minutes, and serve warm.

Tips

Substitute another 1/2 Cup of All Purpose Flour for the Whole Wheat Pastry Flour if desired.

For an apple version, use your favorite baking apples in place of the pears.

Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of rolled oats to the topping when mixing for added texture.
