Grapefruits have a very unique flavor compared to other citrus fruits and are a favorite fruit for breakfast, snacks and juices. The grapefruit is jam packed with beneficial nutrients to do the body good. If you enjoy grapefruits, you'll be glad to know all the ways in which this tasty citrus fruit can boost health.

A Fruit Like No Other
Grapefruit comes in a few varieties, and we generally distinguish these by their color. You can gauge both a grapefruit's ripeness and genetics based on its color. Depending on how long a grapefruit has had to ripen, its pigment will vary accordingly. The most common types of grapefruit are red, white and pink; colors based on the inside of the fruit rather than the outside. For example a red grapefruit does not have a red outer skin, but rather a red pulpy flesh. Flavors for these three different colored grapefruits will vary, ranging from highly acidic and sour to mildly tangy to sweet.

The grapefruit tree itself was first grown in Jamaica, and up to the 19th century the fruit that blossomed on these trees was viewed only as decoration. Grapefruit trees are fairly short with long skinny leaves in a dark green color. White flowers bloom on the trees before blossoming and ripening into yellowish fruit. Once people began to eat the grapefruits they caught on in popularity and grapefruit groves started to appear all over the southern states such as Florida.

Nutritious and Delicious
Grapefruits can offer you many power-packing nutrients. Like all citrus fruits, the grapefruit is a good source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant, so it helps your body to fight off free radicals. These are intrusive and disease causing, so vitamin C is an important component in your body's ability to put up a fight against illness. Vitamin C is also an immune system booster and protects your gums and muscles. Grapefruits also contain another antioxidant called lycopene, and their seeds have antioxidant properties as well, although most people do not consume them. Studies show that grapefruit can even lower cholesterol. It's no wonder that most people on a diet turn to grapefruits. They are rich in nutrients, low in calories and have a low glycemic index which means that grapefruit helps the body's metabolism to burn fat efficiently.

Grapefruits offer you taste, refreshment and nutrition. They are a wonderful contribution to anybody's healthy daily diet. Grab a grapefruit or a glass of grapefruit juice to start your day with a vitamin-rich citrus fix.
