A Fruit Like No Other
Grapefruit comes in a few varieties, and we generally distinguish these by their color. You can gauge both a grapefruit's ripeness and genetics based on its color. The most common types of grapefruit are red, white and pink; colors based on the inside of the fruit rather than the outside. The grapefruit tree itself was first grown in Jamaica, and up to the 19th century the fruit that blossomed on these trees was viewed only as decoration. Grapefruit trees are fairly short with long skinny leaves in a dark green color. White flowers bloom on the trees before blossoming and ripening into yellowish fruit. Once people began to eat the grapefruits they caught on in popularity and grapefruit groves started to appear all over the southern states such as Florida.

Grapefruits also contain another antioxidant called lycopene, and their seeds have antioxidant properties as well, although most people do not consume them. Studies show that grapefruit can even lower cholesterol. It's no wonder that most people on a diet turn to grapefruits. They are rich in nutrients, low in calories and have a low glycemic index which means that grapefruit helps the body's metabolism to burn fat efficiently.
