Grapefruit, vinegar, and other common household items are very effective cleaners. If you want to save money and reduce your carbon footprint, not to mention using fewer caustic chemicals around your home, you can make your own cleaning solutions at home.

It's very easy to make natural cleaning products with items you can find at the local grocery and produce market. With a few spray bottles, some homemade cleaning clothes or wipes, and these cleaning solutions you can keep your home beautiful and clean without endangering your children or pets. Here are some simple recipes for making your own cleaning products using everyday items that you probably already have.

Grapefruit disinfectant – Did you know that grapefruit has natural antibacterial and disinfectant properties? It does, and it smells great, which makes it the perfect thing to use in an all natural disinfectant. Mix up a few teaspoons of Borax powder, which you can find in the laundry aisle at your local supermarket, with a few tablespoons of household vinegar, about a quarter cup of fresh grapefruit juice, and some grated grapefruit peel. Add hot water. Pour into a bucket if you are using to mop the floor, otherwise pour it into spray bottles so it can be used in the kitchen and bathroom. To make disinfectant wipes cut a roll of paper towels in half and submerge one half roll in a plastic container of the mixture. Pull out a soaked paper towel every time you want to quickly disinfect something.

Grapefruit dishwashing soap – to make your dishwashing soap you'll need something called washing soda. Some supermarkets carry washing soda, but it's available online if yours doesn't. Washing soda is a very basic ingredient and can be used in several different types of cleaning solutions including dishwasher soap and laundry soap. To make your own environmentally friendly dishwashing soap mix together equal parts of Borax and washing soda. Add several tablespoons of grated grapefruit peel to give the soap a pleasant smell. You can also use orange zest and even a little grapefruit juice to make your own laundry soap.

Grapefruit mold and mildew cleaner – This simple cleaner is very effective at fighting bathroom mold and mildew. Mix some household vinegar with some Borax and fresh grapefruit juice. Spray the mixture the mold or mildew and wait. Make sure that the mixture stays on for at least an hour. The natural antibacterial properties of the grapefruit juice will help to kill the mold and keep it from returning.
