Warm Grapefruit Treats that are Perfect for Cold Weather
Eating a grapefruit everyday is a fantastic way to stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight. But eating the same thing can be boring if there is no variety. When the weather starts to get cold the breakfast that you eat during the rest of the year, especially grapefruit and other citrus fruits, can start to seem unappealing. But there are lots of ways that you can cook grapefruit or incorporate it into warm breakfast dishes that will give you the hot, hearty breakfast you crave on a cold morning without sacrificing the health benefits that come from eating grapefruit everyday. Try some of these hot breakfast grapefruit and citrus fruit recipes this winter to stay healthy and stay warm.
Toasted grapefruit – This is one of the most popular warm grapefruit dishes, probably because it's so easy but so satisfying. Cut a grapefruit in half, whatever variety you have on hand. Place the halves with the flesh side up on a baking sheet or in a shallow baking pan. Top with butter and brown sugar and bake in a pre-heated oven for five to seven minutes. The warm, sweet and tart grapefruit will be a delicious way to get the fruit you want in a whole new way.
Grapefruit Waffles – Add a new twist to your morning waffles by ditching the syrup and using grapefruit instead. These are also delicious when made using sweet Clementines or Honeybell tangerines instead of grapefruit. Or, mix the juice of a Clementine with grapefruit juice to create a tangy sweet and tart flavor. Toast your waffles as you usually do. While they are toasting pour some honey and some grapefruit or other citrus fruit juice into a pan. Heat until boiling, and then simmer until the waffles are done. Top the waffles with a pat of butter, and then pour the honey grapefruit mixture over the top of the waffles. Add some grapefruit segments too if you want. Kids love this hearty breakfast on chilly weekend mornings.
Ginger Cinnamon Grapefruit Segments – When your family is running out the door in the morning but you still want to give them a hot and healthy breakfast this recipe is perfect. Peel and segment a fresh grapefruit. Arrange the segments on a baking sheet. Melt some butter in a pan and mix in ginger, cinnamon and sugar. Stir until you have a simple sauce then pour it over the grapefruit segments. Bake for five to ten minutes and then serve. These individual warm grapefruit segments are perfect to eat in the car or on the train.
